Besides Sesshoumaru and Jaken, Rin's (more or less) constant companions are Ah-Un, a dragon/horse-like demon with two heads. Not only do they protect her, but they are also someone for her to take care of as well. When they first appear, the two-headed creature has no name. Rin is the one who names them Ah and Un (one name for each head), and eventually even Sesshoumaru calls them by name.
Ah-Un's primary function is travel. At first Sesshoumaru rides them, but once Rin joins the group, she becomes his primary passenger. Besides being able to carry people on land, they can also fly, although it is more like floating in the air than actual flying. The ability seems to come from his feet, where little cloud-like structures appear. Besides being able to fly, Ah-Un can shoot streams of energy from their mouths. Although it is often their job to get Rin out of harms way, when she is in trouble they are able to protect her.
While Ah-Un takes care of Rin, she also takes care of him. She makes sure he gets "yummy grass," grooming, and exercise. Since both Jaken and Sesshoumaru usually reject her help (either overtly or through apathy), being able to take care of Ah-Un gives Rin a sense of being helpful and necessary. Because she can do this little thing for Sesshoumaru, she is not just a useless piece of luggage to be lugged about.
Although Ah and Un lack the ability to speak, it is clear that they care about Rin. They are affectionate toward Rin in a way that is reminiscent of a pet rather than a demon. They good care of Rin, and she in turn loves and takes care of them. Even under her strange and sometimes difficult circumstances, she is able to make friends.
