Rin enters the story after Sesshoumaru had fought a battle with Inuyasha and ended up wounded, near death. He tried to take the Tessaiga from Inuyasha using a dragon arm which would be powerful enough to withstand the force of the barrier around the sword. His attack, however, allowed Inuyasha to see the so-called "scar of the wind" and he was able to counter Sesshoumaru's attack. In fact, it was only through Tenseiga's protection that he survived at all, but he was terribly wounded. The sword transported him away into a forest, where he lay resting when Rin encounters him.
There is a sudden rustling of leaves and Sesshoumaru sits up growling, his eyes glowing red, trying to frighten her away. She gasps, but she approaches him anyway. Later he wakes up and finds a container of water near him, and sees her bringing him food. He rejects her help and her food, because he is a demon and does not eat what humans eat. Still, Rin is determined to be of service to him. She tries to catch a fish for him, but this is considered to be stealing by the people of her village and they beat her terribly, and threaten to kill her if she tries to steal again. Although she can offer him no fish, she tries to bring him whatever food she can find. Still, he rejects it but he does notice her wounds, though he denies any interest. Rin smiles brightly, though Sesshoumaru does not understand why. All he did was ask her a question.
She skips home, happy and content, but when she gets to her little shack, a man is inside drinking water. Although human-like in appearance, he is clearly a demon of some sort. He asks her if this is her home and she nervously nods. The villagers are yelling, "Wolves!" and the man is surprised that they caught up with him already. He pushes Rin aside and tries to run away as wolves attack the villagers. Still, the wolves capture him and drag him back to their leader, a young wolf-demon named Koga. The man had stolen a jewel shard from him, and he wants it back. The man returns it and Koga seems pleased, but when the man believes Koga has spared his life, he turns around and kills him, than tells his wolves to feed on the villagers.
Rin runs to the woods, desperate to get to Sesshoumaru and safety. Wolves pursue her, until she trips on a root and falls to ground, tears of terror welling up in her eyes. The wolves pounce.
Jaken debates whether or not Sesshoumaru was testing his sword on him or demonstrating its power. In the middle of this argument, Sesshoumaru appears and hits him in the head with a rock. Suddenly he smells blood in the air-a familiar smell. He finds Rin's badly bruised body on a path in the woods. Jaken examines the body, remarking that she was bitten to death by wolves and asks Sesshoumaru if he knew her. He ignores the question and instead reflects for a moment before pulling out Tensaiga. The blade pulses and Sesshoumaru understands that the sword wants him to use it. He sees the underworld demons around her and waves the sword over them, causing them to disintegrate. He holds Rin up until her heart begins to beat once more. Jaken is more than mildly shocked to see his master revive a human. She stands up and Sesshoumaru begins to walk away. Jaken continues to angst but Rin simply follows him, leaving Jaken behind.
